George - "THEY SAY I'M A POOR SPORT!"
What's this latest gab we hear? Is it possible that George isn't the same great boy we thought?!
Article from Star Time Magazine
"That George Harrison is just spoiled by success," we heard a newspaper reporter say once. "Now that he's made it, he can't be bothered giving people the time of day. I'm just sorry being a reporter compels me to chase after that guy!"
A photographer agreed with the reporter. He said, "Newspaper and magazine people made George famous. Now he thinks he can turn around and brush us off! He's uncooperative ̶ and a bad sport!"
Almost everyone knows the story of George throwing a drink in a photographer's face awhile back. And everyone knows why he did it ̶ because he felt the photographer was deliberately annoying him and going beyond the call of duty. Does this make George a poor sport?
George told us, "I know I owe a lot of people a lot of favors. I wouldn't be where I am today without their help. And I'm grateful, really I am. I try to be as appreciative and cooperative as I can be ̶ when I can be. But if I have to show my gratitude by letting people 'run all over me,' then I'm against it! I have to be my own man, too, you know."
John once said that just because he might eat Kellogg's Corn Flakes, he couldn't spend the rest of his life being grateful to Mr. Kellogg for making a good product. In other words, he felt that people who appreciate Beatle music couldn't expect him to spend the rest of his life eternally grateful and letting them run his life. Well, George feels the same way.
He told us, "I love my fans. And I appreciate what publicity has done for me. But you have to understand one thing. I'm a human being ̶ as well as a Beatle! And I have to have my right, too! I just can't let myself get pushed around!"
George has been known to give curt answers to reporters and to show he was annoyed when he was. Does this make him a bad sport?
He said, "When people are nice to me, I'm really happy to be nice right back. No matter what some people say, I'm capable of being polite. But I can be impolite when people are rude to me. I don't know, I just feel I can't let people 'walk all over me.' I have to respect myself!"
Obviously, it's not easy being a Beatle... being told to stand this way and then that way... being "on display" every single second.
George told us, "It's not easy. Okay, maybe I am a bit of a 'hot-head.' But as I said, I can't be nice when people aren't nice to me. If that's being a poor sport, then that's what I am!"
If that's being a poor sport, George, then we wouldn't want you any other way!
