Ringo - My "Upset Day With Maureen!"
Ringo's "in a dither" 'cause of something that happened between him and Maureen!
Article from Teen World - July 1965
"I'll pick you up at three o'clock," Ringo was saying into the telephone.
"Pick me up at one," a girl's voice answered.
"I can't make it before three," Ringo told her.
The girl's voice rose, "But I want to see you!"
"Maureen honey," Ringo told her, "I'll pick you up at three. I can't get away before then."
"But I've missed you," Maureen was saying, "I can't wait that long again."
Ringo and Maureen were having a start of an argument. As their telephone conversation continued so did the argument.
Ringo had been working especially hard for the past two weeks. And he'd seen very little of Maureen. For newly-weds, that situation
wasn't exactly making them gloriously happy! In fact, they were getting pretty fidgety by the whole thing.
On this day, Ringo had made a date to take Maureen shopping for some household goods. Not only did they need some things, but they wanted to be together.
"Maureen," Ringo was saying, "as soon as I take care of a few things, I'll be over. Don't worry."
"Shouldn't I be more important than "a few things!" Maureen wanted to know.
"Of course you are," he tried to tell her, "And I'll pick you up as soon as I can."
At two o'clock, Ringo was turning the key in the door of their home. Maureen was waiting for him in the living room, her coat on her arm.
"It's about time," she said, "You're an hour late."
"What you really mean," Ringo told her, "is that I'm an hour early!"
Maureen stood up and put on her coat, not waiting for Ringo to help her with it. She walked to the door and stood there waiting for him.
"Let's go," she said. "It's late enough already without all this time-wasting."
Ringo didn't answer her. But she could tell by the set of his jaw that he wasn't too pleased.
Silently, they left their home. Silently, they rode to the shopping district. Silently, they looked around for things to buy. Silently, they stood
and waited to pay for the things they'd picked out. And silently, they went back home.
"Goodbye," Maureen said as they got to the front door.
"What!" Ringo asked, surprised.
"Aren't you rushing off somewhere?" Maureen said.
"Do you want me to?" Ringo asked quietly.
Maureen didn't say anything for a minute and then she smiled. "Not really," she said.
As you probably guessed, Ringo stayed home the rest of that day. And he stayed home most of the next day, too. But those hours they spent together
weren't silent ones. They were filled with talking and laughter and the happiness of being with the one you love.
That, readers, was Ringo and Maureen's first married lover's quarrel. It probably won't be their last, though. Even though they realize that they can't
get upset over separations, they still do. Even though they realize a married Beatle couple has problems an ordinary couple doesn't have, it still upsets them.
But as long as they can kiss and make up, Ringo and Maureen have nothing to worry about. Their "upsets" can be made right again. Right?
