The Police Get Ringo!

"Ringo Starr is definitely one of the most dangerous young men I've ever come in contact with!"

These were the words of a Liverpool bobby (policeman, to you) as he talked with us about Ringo. We asked him what he meant by that. Surely he didn't mean that Ringo was a criminal!?!

"Oh, no," the policeman said, "I don't mean that at all! Why, from what I've come to know of Ringo, he's quite a jolly chap! But nevertheless, he is dangerous!"

A policeman in New York had this to say about Ringo. "I thought he was a pretty nice fellow, always making jokes and laughing with his friends. But he was dangerous ̶ very, very dangerous!"

A policeman in Miami told us what he thought of Ringo. "I liked him a lot when he was down here. He's a great drummer. But as far as keeping an eye on him when he's with other people ̶ watch out!"

What happens to Ringo to make him so dangerous when he gets near a policemen? Well, actually, it isn't Ringo's fault at all. He doesn't do anything ̶ except be Ringo!

"As far as I'm concerned," the New York policeman said with a twinkle in his eye, "that's enough!

Whenever Ringo gets near a policeman, things start to happen! All the policemen who thought Ringo was dangerous explained why. Whenever a policeman gets near Ringo, of course, he's trying to protect him him from the mobs of screaming fans who want to touch him, kiss him or pull off a piece of his clothes or hair from his mop! And Ringo, being so popular, is very hard to protect! What's more, it actually becomes "dangerous" for the policemen. One policeman actually lost his hat and a lock of his hair! And that's unfortunate because, unlike Ringo, he was almost bald and really didn't have much hair to spare!

One night last year, The Beatles were giving a concert in a small English town. The police were standing guard, naturally, to make sure nobody got too close to any of the boys. But three girls managed to sneak through the police lines and run screaming up to Ringo!

Ringo told us, "They started pulling at my arms and legs. I felt like a paper doll! I know they didn't mean to hurt me ̶but with all that wild pulling, they couldn't help it! The next thing I knew, I was on the ground ̶ and those girls were ripping off me clothes! And that might have been, well ̶ chilly!"

During this, the policemen had been trying to pull the girls away and free poor Ringo. Finally, they did it ̶ but not before one policeman got a cut over one eye and another had most of his buttons torn off his uniform!

"That's one night," one of those unfortunate policemen told us, "I won't forget for a long time! Of course, it wasn't Ringo's fault, but you can't blame me for thinking he's pretty dangerous!"

All we can say is that if Ringo's dangerous, sure all of you would love to be in danger! Agree?
